Riveting show in riveted metal theatre.
Starting off on the quayside some wet people accost the audience. It
seems the huge sea monster they were hoping to capture has caused their
vessel to sink and got them in the drink. One of them "harpoonerist"
Ned has got quite a bit of drink in him, swaying about saying farewell
to his wife and his bairns - only one when we witnessed their goodbyes.
The other wet persons are a French Professor and his engaging manservant.
Lurking around is a passing landblubber pouring scorn on the storytellers
- he has The Paris Gazette (the cunningly disguised programme, worth a
gander) to sell.
With the story so far told the audience is invited aboard and down into
the ship with the voyagers. There we find the three seafarers swaying
on a metal moving island looking around as one by one they get captured
by a strange being, till they're all beneath the waves, held prisoner
by Captain Nemo. Peter Grimes' version of Jules Verne's story is told
by Walk The Plank with humour and some eye pleasing and surprising video
art. There's a variety of acting styles used, go all the way from from
a David Attenbourgh sound like moment to overhearing the emotional result
of the profound loss Captain Nemo has suffered. Best and frequent use
of a prop goes to their hemisphereical translucent bowl deployed in many
ways including an undersea moments with extraordinary fish and later a
shrimp hand puppet.
It works for adults as well as children old enough to cope with a two
hour show including interval. At times with the throb of the Fitzcarraldo
engines, the riveted metal theatre and the riveting show it felt like
we were aboard the Nautalius too.
