Fun in Science and Bible stories.
A touring showcase of work in development is a chance to see new companies
and or new directions for more establish creatives. In this 2004 tour
BAC developed five shows including one for children. I managed to catch
two of them when they went to the Tron in Glasgow.
The Spaceman
The Scientist bounces in arms wide and "Welcome! Welcome!" he
says with a smile. Using blackboards, lighting, music and some very well
animated chalks, Betty and Harry, performer Mark Down tells the tale of
Bud who grows up to be a spaceman. Better know for their adult puppet
productions here there's enough science to keep young and old interested,
some gentle jokes and space for children to help the story along. Performed
when I saw it in front of an audience comprised only of grownups Blind
Summit's first children's show hasn't got into the stratosphere yet but
does a good job of altering the atmosphere in a positive way.
In The Beginning -
This is the Itailian answer to the National Theatre of Brent, three Brothers,
Popo, Pipi and Pepe bring their crate of props, their own versions of
Biblical tales and their family tensions. Popo is the oldest and shortest,
Pipi's the one who loves the big dramatic guestures and Pepe the youngest
gets the hardest roles.
It's a warm romp with lots of knockabout fun where we get not only the
first story in the Bible, but the naming of the animals and the snake
with a God who's more maifia than magnificient, an Adam whose tassel isn't
quite big enough yet (costume department please note) and quite the most
wonderful Eve I have ever seen. As well as laughter they bring pizza and
wine, in a show destined for the Edinburgh Fringe, the Brothers look set
to give a good time to everyone who likes fun with their stories.
