Reviewer - Thelma Good. Tight direction, gutsy acting & production. Jarry's Ubu spills over with Punch and Judy knock about, Shakespeare allusions, and anarchy in Theatre Modo's version. Robert Jack is Ubu, Louise Allan is Ma Ubu while Nick Underwood is F***flaps the man who helps Ubu overthrow King Connelly, they also play other parts as necessary. The parallels with Macbeth are underlined in this Ubu, the country he's in is Scotchland strengthening the potential political parody. The grotesque also comes clearly through so we have to take these ghastly unredeaming people as they are and also find in our reactions we rather like their awfull un-PC behaviour. Using three tin trunks, a telescopic black poking stick and loads of food to chuck around, with songs and lyrics by Nick Underwood which have an effective Kurt Weill feel, it's fiercely Rabelaisian. From the off the piece commands our attention communicating the moment it starts and finishes with unusual clarity. With Martin Danziger's consistently tight direction, these three skilled actors take us successfully through what could be a confusing drama. Only at Glasgow for three nights there will chances next year in Cumbernauld and Edinburgh as well as in Milan, Frankfurt and Grenoble to see this production from a company who produce gutsy and strongly theatrical experiences.
