Haunting.

It haunts this one. Four people wrote the text, more were involved in the development of the production and five actors, one non-speaking, are on stage. Zero Degrees containing theatrical meditation and a narrative story comes alive and more.

Traverse Two's stage is filled with clutter when the play starts. At one side towards the back an off-shore DJ, Chris Thorpe, spins the occasional disc.Throughout at times he reads out descriptions of missing people vanished all over the world, it's ship based radio station's Outlook AM's reason for being. Some from our local streets, others from war zones or far destinations not arrived at, the uncertainity of lives is not only underlined here, where True Love and Optimism are included in the lost, the fleeting sightings are present in all of Zero Degrees' characters.

Marianne Blackley, Sarah Belcher, and Alan Valentine, Nathan Rimell, are a couple, he goes off to sea for months and this is their 6th year together living in a lighthouse. They frequently speak in the third person, more often than we see them converse. Further along the coast Bea Saunders, Elizabeth Besbrode, the only curator of the disintegrating Museum of Everything That Matters records updates as the Gallery of Memories, the collection of all sorts of precipitation and the Great Hall of Expectations, to name just a few, audibly crumble and fall off the eroding cliff face.

One day, in a wordfree marvellous performance by Theron U. Schmidt, a nearly naked man is washed up by the sea, Mairianne finds him and takes him home. Though he never speaks he affects deeply the three he meets. His essence for us and them flickers between stranger, Christ, a lost or discovering love or child or a miracle angel in our midst.

In Zero Degrees each character is enigmatic, the pace and text of the piece dreamlike - it's very effective.
