Those familiar with the work of Dario Fo will know that expecting an excellent performance isn't asking too much. The sheer quality of his work means it's hard to go wrong. To do so would take an extreme amount of effort. Thankfully this wasn't the case in this instance although the opening scene led me to fear the worst. Whilst being held in a police station, a Madman, Alan McHugh, decides to investigate the suspicious circumstances surrounding the supposedly accidental death of an anarchist railway worker blamed for bombing a bank. Through zany disguises he leads the police officers involved through a series of emotional interrogations and trials to show them up for who they really are. An Accidential Death of An Anarchist, inspired by events that occurred in Milan in 1969, takes the heavy subject matter and whips it up into a frenzied farce that is as hilarious as it is poignant. Only the opening scene gave any feeling to the contrary. It was rushed and rocky on the night I saw it. When McHugh had by the second scene fully relaxed into his part, the performances picked up and began their riotous ride into political satire. The bold set and bloody stage screamed 1980's nightclub and seem a peculiar choice of background. Nevertheless, it became insignificant as the show progressed. All eyes were fixed on the actors who delivered splendidly. For those less acquainted with the work of Dario Fo this is an ideal chance to see just how good it is. It may not be the best ever production of this play but it certainly doesn't do anything to damage its reputation. Overall it is funny, political without preaching and as for expecting excellence? Well this Dario Fo enthusiast was satisfied. © Georgina Merry 23 September 2005 - Published on EdinburghGuide.com Cast - The Madman - Alan McHugh, Bertozzo- Rod Young, Inspector - Sean Hay, Superintendant - Jim Byars, Constable- Andrew Murry and Journalist - Anita Vetesse. 2005 Tour Details of Borderline's Theatre's production of An Accidential Death of An Anarchist.
