Instead of a Rake there's a very precocious child and his easily led parents. Some not all of Murray's blows land squarely. Only some because script is uneven, particularly in Day 6 of Baby's life which just isn't as acerbically written as the rest, though the cast to try to serve its punch as freshly stinking as they can. Janet and John, played with zest by PJ Hendry and Claire Knight, are a country couple with a simple faith in God when first we met them. They're having fun with one another in a field. The consequence puts in his appears pretty fast and Day 1 of Baby's life begins. With the frolic and the birth. An astonishingly early talker he also has an effect on people who meet him, as he radiates and rises up in the air glowing. All the cast are white-faced and with the text using lots of deliciously ornate words and sentence structure - Baby's into Shakespeare pretty quick - the play is set in a period 250 years ago, but items and personages from the future also appear. The London the family are presuaed to move to to benefit their offspring is nearly as confusing and corrupting as today's. Baby's a superbly expressive puppet marvellously manipulated by actor David Walshe, while all the people the trio encounter in this tale are played with panache and flair in very quick-changes by the versatile actor Simon Donaldson. His Prime Minister at the end is a guffaw-making pleasure. Played on a set consisting of sloped retangular boarded boxes of several sizes, with props and scenery of 2D cardboard, Big Baby does not develop the button bursting, clothes splitting vigour of the sharpest satires. But it's worth a look none the less, there's some good physical theatre, verbal fun and subversive comedy writing to be enjoyed. © Thelma Good 10 October 2005 - Published on EdinburghGuide.com Cast - Everybody Elsie - Simon Donaldson, John - PJ Hendry, Janet - Claire Knight and Baby - David Walshe. 2005 Tour Details of Visible Fictions's production of Big Baby .
