Deeply disturbing and extremely funny.

Sometimes it is hard to remember why it is I do what I do. The love of theatre? I like to think so. Occasionally I wonder though, walking out of shows displeased and disappointed. Maybe I should just watch movies and get to interview the likes of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. Maybe. Or maybe I should be very thankful that plays like A Brief History Of Helen of Troy come along and allow me to release a sigh of relief. Phew!  I haven’t done all of this for nothing.

Charlotte is mourning over the death of her beautiful mother. Her relationship with her father is breaking and there seems to be nowhere for her to turn. That is until she discovers the magic of the beauty product. Then, in a blinding flash, it all becomes clear what her purpose in the world is. Sex!
Both deeply disturbing and extremely funny, A Brief History Of Helen Of Troy  is a great piece of theatre. One moment tender and loving, the next gripping and sinister, the play, through all its variant moods hangs on to that human notion that we all just want to be loved…….no matter what the cost. We laugh, we cringe, we shy our eyes away, but we all understand in some sick and twisted way why Charlotte is the way that she is. When all is dark and the world seems to have gone to hell, the simple comfort of being in the arms of a loved one can, momentarily, make it all seem okay again. Charlotte shelters herself from emptiness and loss with beauty just as we would use an umbrella against the rain.

Top notch acting and superb directing make this one not to miss. It’s not here for long so grab a ticket as soon as you can or you’ll have to wait a while before there is anything quite like this in town again. Sorry Miss Jolie! You’re going to have to wait too!
