Striking direction in Christmas treat.
The Ghosts of Christmas and the puppets of want and ignorance designed by the Edinburgh Art College design students keep with its Victorian atmosphere as well as an eerie Christmas Yet To Come of amazing height. And O'Connor's lithograph-like city-scape is so well applied to the curved surface they seem three not two dimensional. Multidimensional is what we find in the cast. John Bett makes Scrooge a grump we want to know why he is so mean. Scrooge's gradual realisation that he has made a rack of his own personality is quietly and increasingly moving. Giving us amongst others the poor but loving Cratchits, Scrooge's happy nephew Fred, Scrooge's first employer the merry Fezziwig and Scrooge's wise partner Marley and their guests the cast make the familiar Dickens characters fully rounded. John Jack's solo singing hits a special emotional spot of longing, he also turns in a notable Perkin, Simon Coury's much underpaid Bob Cratchit and Joanna Tope's varied females - Mrss Cratchit and Fezziwig and the lady hoping for romance all also catch the eye, but around them, whatever the size of role, the rest of the professional cast deliver as well. Bringing us the younger characters are the actors from the Lyceum Youth Theatre, God bless them every one! For the Red Team at any rate contains well formed portrayals in the young Scrooges and the Cratchits children especially Tiny Tim. It's a very demanding production for all, those on stage and behind, with its many scene changes, many songs, all aided by Malcolm Shield's choreography. It's all the more remarkable how well it all comes together, as the detailed, striking direction achieved by Jemima Levick is her first experience of being in charge of a large stage production. Looking at this production so early in her career suggests her career will be exciting and rewarding to watch. Christmas shows have to deliver delight, humour along with a sense of fulfilling order and emotions. The Royal Lyceum Theatre Production of Karen Louise Hebden's well crafted adaptation is such a Christmas star. © Thelma Good 2 December 2005 - Published on EdinburghGuide.com Further Info - This production was sponsored by Standard Life.
