This version of the fairy tale isn't perhaps exactly the one most of the audience will be expecting. But it stays close to the traditions and spirit of what makes folk tales so enduring. The triumph of good over evil and a plucky spirit over the cruelties of life will always be absorbing for generations of children. It is not exactly traditional panto, either - no cross dressing, bawdy jokes or stopping mid action to burst into pop songs. But, "Oh yes there is!", plenty of chances for the audience to join in. Which is just what an enthusiastic and appreciative audience did at this performance. And there is lots of emotional tugging of the heart strings, fun and laughter. The play opens with a bleak stage set of a single tree growing above Cinderella's dead mother 's grave, but this monochrome soon gives way to a glorious riot of colour. Alternating between the grand dining room of a palace and the cavernous kitchen, the set design is always visually interesting. Costumes are another delight. This Cinderella is a feisty and rebellious young heroine played with gusto by Ionia Ni Chroinin, and she soon has the audience rooting for her against a wickedly outrageous stepmother. She is played by Irene MacDougal with a whole hearted, confident skill that has the audience putty in her hands. We booed as if our lives depended on it. There's lots of laughter and good natured fun to be had with John Buick's Sergeant Puff , the chef in charge of the kitchen. The rather pompous and self important Prince Charming is played with gentle good humour by Keith Fleming. Engaging storytelling is the result of this fine ensemble playing. Even the younger children in the audience remain captivated throughout. A feast for the eyes, fast moving storytelling and engaging performances create theatrical magic to enchant. A very enjoyable and entertaining evening, to be warmly appreciated by an audience of all ages. ©Jan Natanson 12 December 2005 - Published on EdinburghGuide.com Cast - Isabella(Cinderella) - Ionia NiChroinin, Claudia/Fairy Godmother - Irene MacDougal, Claudine -Emily Pollet, Claudette - Emily Winter, Sergeant Puff - John Buick, Callum/Dancing Bear -Paul Boyd, Black Douglas - David Ireland and Prince Rufus - Keith Fleming.
