Energetic, humorous reinvention.

With its disco balls, silver tinsel curtain and gaudy gold and purple colour scheme the set looks ready to host the grand final of Stars in Their Eyes. Thankfully the audience is instead treated to an energetic, humorous reinvention of a familiar story, told from the point of view of Cinderella's notoriously nasty step-sisters. Penny, Helen Devon, and Pam, Michele Gallagher, are here to put the record straight, and they do so with the aid of some energetic dance routines, spirited acting and seriously glitzy costumes.

Behind the glitter and the ballroom there is a serious message here about family relationships and parental expectations, the most thought-provoking scenes being those featuring the sisters' overbearing mother - effortlessly brought to life by both women with the simple donning of a neckscarf. We are also encouraged to dispel any romantic notions we might have about Cinderella's happy-ever-after. Far from a life of luxury in a fairytale palace Cinders lives "in a bungalow in Peebles with her husband, two kids and a part-time job in an ice-cream shop". There are no Princes here, neither are there goodies and baddies, just ordinary people with everyday problems and everyday dreams.

The story occasionally lacks pace, and towards the end of the press afternoon performance some younger members of the audience were beginning to get fidgety. A restlessness not helped by slightly long-winded and clumsy scene changes, although with practice these should tighten up as the run continues.

The distinctive personalities of the two sisters are impressively well portrayed with quieter moments of reflection and regret cleverly juxtaposed with more physical, comical scenes. The show ends on a positive note of forgiveness and reconciliation. It's a fitting end to a well-written, cleverly staged play reminding us that nobody's perfect in a world where even nice people sometimes do nasty things, and not a bewitched pumpkin in sight.
