Reviewer - Jay Dee. Warms up nicely. William Shakespeare's Comedy of Errors is the ultimate farce. It's got everything - shipwreck, mistaken identity, two sets of identical twins, the reunion of a long sundered family, a prostitute, a nun and handcuffs. Northern Broadsides' production, currently running at the Citizen's Theatre in Glasgow, is a pretty good way of discovering this great play, if you've never encountered it before. The play begins with a merchant, Egeon, being sentenced to death for reasons too complicated to explain. After explaining his sorry tale of the loss of his family some years earlier, he is given one day to try to find them. Trouble is, his lost family consists of two sets of identical twins, so alike no-one can tell them apart and by some amazing chance both sets of twins have ended up in the same town as their long lost father. You can see where this is going already... Northern Broadsides have opted to set their production in the fifties, making great use of sharp Teddy Boy suits, vibrant colours and a very 'hep' jazz band for accompaniement. But the show is not overdesigned; the great costumes and music never overpower the production which includes several fantastic performances. The whole cast is pretty good; slick and fluid but the Syracusan twins, played by Andrew Cryer and Conrad Nelson, deserve special mention. Cryer in particular gives a great physical performance which, although rubber of face and body, never feels over the top. The whole production is slick and sharp and warms up nicely, especially during the frenetic second half. By the time the fantastical climax is reached the whole audience is rooting for these tortured twins to find each other. It's a very enjoyable show. © Jay Dee 11 May 2005 - Published on EdinburghGuide.com Cast - Duke Solinus - Richard Standing Egeon - Barrie Rutter Antipholus of Syracuse - Andrew Cryer Antipholus of Ephesus - Conor Ryan Dromio of Syracuse - Conrad Nelson Dromio of Ephesus - Simon Holland Roberts Merchant - Max Rubin Adriana - Zoe Lambert Luciana - Claire Storey Balthazar & Officer - Gary Skelton Luce & Courtesan - Ruth Alexander-Rubin Dr Pinch - Andrew Vincent and Abbess - Sarah Parks. 2005 Tour Details of Broadsides' production of The Comedy of Errors by Shakespeare and Sweet William by Alan Plater.
