Seen to review at Traverse Theatre Edinburgh 25 May 2005. Run Time - 55 mins NO interval. Suggested Age - 9 - 14 years old . Reviewer - Thelma Good. Delight in sheer theatricality. Chekov's tale of a little dog who loses her master and finds a new home in a circus with a man who has an act performed by a pig, a cat and a goose is heartwarming. And actress Nataliya Kuznetsova, in the central role of Kashtanka as she bounces and leaps bright-eyed around the stage, has us willing her to find shelter in a harsh world. When she finds sanctuary the other animals are evoked by the costumes and the physical movement of her fellow actors with a particulary fine bird, from Vladimir Dvorman. long red shoes and a tail suit made him a particularily sharp avian. Though those of us who have been to the zoo recently may see him as a penguin rather than a nippy goose. This company creates work for all ages and the pace of this production is much less direct compared to some but not all British companies. There's a delight in the sheer theatricality of the production which those unfortunately fight shy of. While the style sucessfully challenges the mis-held theories of today's audiences' short and simple attention spans, one obstacle did hinder full grasp of the story unfortunately. The actors were acting in English and whilst some were easy to understand others either didn't project enough or placed the wrong emphasies in sentences.
