Cast - here . Company - Teatro La Ribalta (Italy) Company Email. Seen to review at Traverse Edinburgh 28 May 2005. Run Time - 1 hour NO interval. Suggested Age - 10 - 14 years old . Reviewer - Thelma Good. Terrifically truthful. Intense, passionate and full of real emotion, this physical theatre peice touches deeps and reveals more of the human heart through a children's story we all know from the accurately named Grimm brothers. It's been Disneyfied and bowdlerised but this retelling restores its powerful resounances. Filippo Ughi plays the spirit of the mirror, whatever he reflects he can not lie. Micaela Sapienza is the evil stepmother who wants only adoration and love from her mirror mate. But he finds the endless mirroring tiresome and when it is dark he sneaks away to discover another love object. She is Snow White, rendered here to look like a plaster saint complete with electronic halo. The tale spirals into jealously and hate and the Queen becomes ugly in her vengeance and even the wonderful Fipippo's character shows a nasty side. Revealing the tale's echoes in modern time in this production, with the use of pop songs and fast red model cars and sun glasses, strongly links in to our experiences of marriages and relationships gone sour or wrong. Jealousy and anger is magnificently played out in the production's traverse setting with the audience set on either side, while the protagonists literally and metaphorically fight and decieve as they push pull and slide themselves and one another along and back on the slippy, shiny stage cloth. Although described as suitable for 10 year and up, there will be some younger children who find this production immensely helpful as it explores the way we are driven by our emotions both good and bad. There will though be others who find it disturbing, as will some adults. As for me I think it's terrifically truthful and one of the best things I have seen at Imaginate. It ranks for me with Childhood Tale seen in 2001 at this festival which also interestingly came from Italy. © Thelma Good 28 May 2005 - Published on EdinburghGuide.com Cast - Micaela Sapienza and Filippo Ughi.
