Strange lugubrious humour.

Michael Blyth's play Such Is Nature has a strong gothic flavour. The Midnight Cat gets Wilde the Owl to tell him a story. It's a odd tale about Borborgymous Dour, a man who collects only sad things, including sounds in decanters. Sound we hear when he opens their stoppers. It's a strange lugubrious humour balancing on the edge between dark and macabre.

With one of the actors always providing the voices for another actor, and a mix of recorded, guitar music and voice-made sound effects, the unreal style of the production fits with Blyth's text. Also in tune is designer Claire Hallerain set made of cupboard, settle, and table which ivy-decorated also serves as forest and owl perch. Whilst the actors bring good physicality to their roles it is unfortunate that Borborgymous Dour bent over body is lost when ever he reaches into his too-high cupboard.

Such is Nature has a lot of twists and turns and a tale outside that of Mr Dour, but seven or eight years olds like a bit of complexity. They certainly loved it when Mr Dour completed his collection. Its dark and gloomy atmosphere may not be to all childrens' or carers' natural taste but the Cat In A Cup's production directed by Jo Timmins keeps the audiences feeling safe and secure - it's only very mildly scary. This new company's offering contains enough to hope they are enabled to develop their style.
