Reviewer - Thelma Good. Expectant hush rewarded. It's two centuries since Hans Christian Andersen's birth but with brillant shows like this he'll never be forgotten. Lisbeth Knopper with riglets and a cream period dress comes out to the waiting children and asks them if they would kindly enter the theatre quietly becuse there's a writer writing down there. All the way down the stairs they go in an expectant hush - children are the best of audiences - it was a few adults who didn't obey! Inside there is indeed a writer, quill in hand, dressed in cream at an old fashioned desk with a sloping lid. The woman tells us it's Hans Christian Andersen and while we wait she begins to tell us some stories. Before long she has an assistant, a glove bird puppet covered in fledgling fluff. He's gloriously, beautifully brought to life by Knopper. The bird is not the only surprise the production contains, the desk transforms into palaces as well as a tiny minature of Andersen tiny one-roomed childhood room. The stories are told with consumate skill, though the Emperor puppet is more clothed than Andersen intended. It's a super birthday gift to the memory of Andersen. He would be delighted to know the children and the child in each of us still love his stories and are inspired to create delightful theatre from them.
