Should we know everything about people in the public eye? Are red-tops still newspapers or just gossip sheets? How do men and women relate at work? Steve Thompson first play is a high octane look at life in the chief sub-editors office in the two hours before the next day's edition is printed. It's intricately written and Damages in this tightly directed and acted production delivers an engrossing evening out.

As the clock ticks on Peter Kelly hits all the angles of Sub-editor Howard, the man who can still turn a great phrase and was "a real journalist ...fired at in Pakistan" his office is where it's set. Into his room come Bas, played with eager zest and depth by Ewan Donald. Bas is the university graduate doing his first term as night editor, he's anxious about a story that someone else is punting for the front page.

Shortly after he leaves in comes the man himself, the deputy editor Lister, memorably played by George Drennan, full of his first exclusive in months involving a TV presenter and her private life. Later the female lawyer arrives to check out which stories might incur damages, she's every inch the modern educated woman. Abigail's learnt to play the men at their own games and can introduce some new ones herself, and Shonagh Price gives her sharp edged charm and intelligence. Both the chemistry between all of them and the different life forces of each of them are well brought out by the actors and Eman's direction.

Designer Lyn McAndrew's well thought out costumes and her set which echoes the great newspaper dramas of the past with Howard's 50's favourite tunes "Come Fly With Me" and "Making Whoopy" all underline the sad deterioration of those many daily print publications and people who have colluded in their decline as forces for information and opinion. This production of Damages is well presented Scottish premiere from Rapture Theatre, a wee company who punch above their weight to give high and satisfying quality in wide ranging tours around this country.
