Immensely watchable.

It’s a curious dichotomy. In today’s multi-cultural, global society where contact and communication is instant through website, email and mobile phone, it seems that forming personal relationships between people has become more and more complex. On the internet, we hide behind user names and passwords, losing our identity in the process.  So how do we move from text message to touch, from verbal to physical?

Imagine a giant Scalextric board – a large-scale racing track in a figure of eight with  twists, turns and flyovers. A soundtrack begins featuring different voices in Italian and English, questioning opinion and preferences. The subject is travel. “What about India?" , "Anywhere except indoors”, is the response. A young English woman,Selina Boyack, stands washing at one end of the track while at the opposite end, an Italian man, Sergio Romano, is checking his appearance in a mirror. They are both single and completing questionnaires for a Dating Agency.  She likes to dance and to read. Last book? Poetry. I don’t know the poet’s name but she committed suicide. She pauses, reflecting on this tragedy then adds poignantly, “I am here, alive and kicking".

As an Agency consultant, she begins to interrogate the Italian man. His profile has to be assessed to find the perfect match. Favourite country? Norway, he replies, although he admits to having never visited but likes the idea of a desolate landscape.  The conversation –  fluid and rather poetic, blending Italian and English - takes place walking over, around and sitting on the track. She questions his response of being “very, very experienced sexually” asking him about previous relationships. Meanwhile her body language alters and tentatively she steps nearer.

Through a series of profile questionnaires, role play and analysis, we begin to understand their true identities and discern the truth from fantasy. Lost in their separate private worlds, they both appear to be isolated, unattached loners, desperate to find their perfect partner. Both performers are immensely watchable, the characters well drawn as the narrative shifts between humour and pathos. Credit is due to Graham Eatough’s precise direction, his eye for dramatic pace, movement and gesture while the overall vision and sound captures the imagination.

The foremost aim of Suspect Culture is to collaborate with international companies. A strong connection with the theatre scene in Milan has evolved since Suspect Culture performed Airport – a brilliant observation of travellers in limboland – at Scotsfest Milan, 1997.  Since then writer Renato Gabrielli and actor Sergio Romano have become associate artists on several productions.  This is Scottish theatre at its best. Never parochial but always vital, inspiring, intelligent, contemporary drama for the European stage.
