Harsh eroticism.

Judge Brack looks at Hedda both seated on a sofa and dressed in 1890's formal clothes.

Theatre Babel's Artistic Director Graham McLaren is going to be the new co-director of the Perth Theatre from the 2005 -06 season on with Ian Grieve who is also in Hedda Gabler, but Lorna McDevitt's Hedda is the centre of this play and production. She's dressed in a blue shot gown which alters under the lights from black to a slightly overcast blue sky. Hedda and her scholarly husband Tesman, Ian Grieve, are back from a six month honeymoon and have just taken a house on their prospects.

On the day they take up residence they have lots of visitors. First off is Tesman's substitute mother, his father's sister Juliana, Eileen MacCallum in fine maiden aunt bustle. She's hoping for news of small warm bundles to come, and has also mortgaged her pension against his prospects. Then Mrs Elvsted, Sarah Chalcroft, comes calling, a married woman gripped in a passion for her children's tutor Eilert Lovborg.

Next Judge Brack, played with cruel attraction by Simon Roberts has helped them with their new abode but he tells them Tesman's possible university appointment is to be subject to a competition with Lovborg who has published a book on The March of Civilisation. Then the distracted Lovborg, John Kazek appears to see Hedda, like Brack he's known her in the past. Among the strongest moments are Robert's Brack and McDevitt's Hedda in the harsh eroticism of their later exchanges, Chalfont's unnerved by how much she loves Mrs Elvsted, but both Grieve's Tesman and Kazek's Lovborg aren't quite tuned in enough yet.

Hedda Gabler's one of Ibsen's and Theatre's fascinating women. Whatever made her the way she is is no more than hinted at, and the tensions are all the stronger for that. Theatre Babel's production has autumn leaves rather fuzzily strewn over the stage, and a oddly placed burnt manuscript, but elsewhere restrain and some clarity of staging suggests much, all dramatically amplified by Kai Fischer's powerfully emotive lighting.

Despite my caveats the production is still fertile with the tussle women have with their bodies and their power over others. It has us watching as with sickening inevitability everyone's hopes are exploded.
