Run Time - 1hours 45 mins including Interval. Reviewer - Thelma Good. Not quite as charming. Mull theatre's a great wee company and now they are touring Lisa Grindall's play based on Mairi Hedderwick's Katie Morag stories round Scotland. The production doesn't quite have the charm of the original Island based Katie Morag yet. Kirstin McLean energentically plays Katie the red haired girl who's waving off her Mum, Dad and wee brother as they take him off for a check-up in Glasgow. She's left in the tender care of her two contrasting grannies - Posh Granny Mainland and dungareed Grannie Island. Off the ferry comes some Americans, Lauren's brought her children Dude and Princess given by Kevin Lennon and Claire Dargo all the out of place graceless, raw charm of these urban USers. Katie's appalled to find they're related and then she finds she's got to be socialable with them too! It's a fresh story different from those in the books but it keeps the flavour of them well. It's a pity that the songs aren't more memorable and it's a mistake to teach one carefully and then use a different one for the reprise. Though Robin Peoples' shape changing set becomes 3D versions of Hedderwick's affectionate drawings and the pony Eriskay is soft delight there are problems with the feel of the production elsewhere too. The handling of the audience is just too old fashioned and arch, sapping the audience's desire to take part. With some better songs and more inviting audience participation this wee show would have us all taking Katie and her US pals even more to our hearts. © Thelma Good 23 September 2005 - Published on EdinburghGuide.com Theate Editor's Note - The Katie Morag books written and illustrated by Mairi Hedderwick are published by Bodley Head and are great fun to read and share with young people and people who love islands and or Scotland everywhere.
