Communicates using a separate language.

All day I have been struggling to find the words to describe Ketzal, the latest work by the physical theatre group Derevo, which had its UK premiere at The Arches in Glasgow this weekend. I don't usually find myself at a loss for words. What is it about this piece that has me struck dumb? It's not that I was stunned by it's brilliance into an awesome silence, although it is both brilliant and stunning. It's not that it employed such exciting theatrical devices that I have no frame of reference for them, although its use of the theatrical was quite the most exciting I have seen in a very long time. It is simply because the piece communicates with the viewer using a separate language and seems to demand a different response than the expected literate criticism.

The piece is, in essence, a song of the body, at least that is how it is phrased in the show's publicity materials and I can find no better way to put it. There isn't really a recognisable story as much as there are explored relationships, both physical and emotional. The movement of the performers is at once naturalistic and seemingly spontaneous and also flowing with the precision which comes from months of rehearsal. It is a poetry which focuses on the shape and movement of the human body.

What is most intriguing about this production is its respect for the viewer. The audience's gaze is not manipulated but guided by lighting and sound, both employed to startling effect - the viewer may choose where to look and so constantly discovers new characters and movements. The ballet of the body is allowed space and time to develop, allowing the audience space and time to respond and interpret as they will.
This is a truly beautiful piece of theatre, one that I will remember forever tought it defeats descriptiont. Truth be told, such a visual and physical experience demands a physical response. See it, if you can.
