The play depicts the desperate struggle undergone by the Young Woman, to achieve eloquence and thus to some degree self-expression and autonomy. Yet, played in this production by Rosalind Sydney, her struggle is never quite tense or powerful enough. The production persistently relies on overtly atmospheric lighting, tense music and ‘ hammy’ horror tunes to convey the turmoil of a religious and compliant woman’s journey of discovery. However, the scenes between the young woman and her male co-actors are, at times, very effective. Indeed John Kazek as Gilbert Horn, captures the reclusive, but self-confident miller well, conveying much of the script’s latent humour excellently onstage. The stage set is messy, decorated with random paint splashes and is a little over-functional, with a prop box left unexplained and out of place onstage throughout. However, the designer has broken up the space well, managing to create areas that allow the rapid scenes to occur smoothly. The set also undeniably achieves the ambiguous, traitless ‘rural place’ setting, which is entirely in keeping with the play’s local, yet distinctly distant, God fearing community. In truth, this is a difficult play to produce and one that requires more subtle direction than it recieves here. Yet, if you want to see a fair representation of Scottish playwright Harrower’s fine and too rarely performed play in Scotland, then TAG are touring the play throughout the country, until March 16th. © Marisa Farrell 8th February 2005 – published on EdinburghGuide.com Harrower's new play Blackbird is to premiere in August 2005 at the Edinburgh International Festival.
