Comic charms not enough.

Sometimes the reason for a devised piece and the sound desire to communicate it escapes a production. A Little Laugh I Lost Somewhere has some entertaining actors with some comic potential. But it nearly lost this reviewer who's pretty keen on physical theatre, in fact I nearly nodding off a couple of times.

It's inspired by Antoine Saint-Exupery's The Story of the Little Prince who appears to many people in the course of his journey including an aviator in a dessert. Director Skye Lonergan with her devising crew starts the action in group for the not specifically dissatisfied where a succession of people wearing flying helmets confess their dissatisfaction including Roger who nearly has to leave on account that he's specifically dissatisfied that he isn't reacting to downers like his wife leaving.

And so the show continues with physical clowning seemingly employed to no specific purpose, and hard to follow characters even if you were familiar with the book. It's important in theatre to take care of your audience and this production didn't enough. I've said it before and I'll say it again, you need a complete outside eye to look at a devised show before audiences do..

At times it is like watching a company of the seriously deranged who have been given a strong dose of a loving drug. Oh yes that gets through very strongly, and when they leave us with their final co-written chalked thought " The eyes are blind one must look with the heart" you could may be forgive them if you'd done the unusual and read the pre-show publicity and the programme. As it is the production runs the danger of losing the audience's attention before the point is revealed at the end.
