This play's emotions work their effects clearly more powerfully in bigger spaces and it benefits from being seen on a larger proscenium arched stage. Sometimes as an audience we need a little more physical distance from the actors before we can let ourselves feel with them and this play, set in Mary's dream before she is about to get married, is one of those times. There are also subtle changes which add to the production's intensity. Not least the strongly directed physical movement of Veronica Leer as Mary and Christopher Stevenson as Charlie also benefit being seen from a greater distance. They move as if they were truly astride their steed with the strong sensuality of their shared horse ride in Canada and then, toward the end of the play, Stevenson's Charlie bravely rides in a Cavalry charge. Coupled with a real sense of the urgent bewildering emotions of their first love, both actors add a beating heart to this revived production. Leer's portrayal of Mary this time better tempers the managing side of her character, making it seem the action of a girl whose desire makes her glow white hot but who knows she, as the maiden, must keep her head. While Stevenson's Charlie grows from a boy terrified of thunder to a man who can face fear down. Covering first love thwarted by war, how loving someone strongly is as frightening as it is exhilarating, and companionship in war in the dreamed bond between Charlie and Sergeant Flowerdew, played by Leer, the play's dream setting now in this revival achieves full effect. © Thelma Good 17 February 2005. - Published on EdinburghGuide.com Review of the 2003 production which had the same team and cast but was staged in a a much smaller space, the Lawrence Levy Studio theatre at the Byre.
