Seen to review at North Edinburgh Arts Centre on 22 October 2005. Run Time - 50 mins no Interval. Reviewer - Thelma Good. Very watchable. Two very watchable actors Louise Allan and Toni Frutin are Gerda and Ed, best friends till one day the Snow Queen shatters her mirror and shards go into Ed's heart and eye with chilling results. The happy youngster turns into a name calling, nasty child and one day follows a huge snowflake and disappears from home. Theatre Modo's Snow Queen isn't a run of the mill show. It will have children and adults keenly leaning forward, laughing and wondering what will happen next in a play full of incident. Gerda sets off to find her chum and the audience is needed to lend a hand. They're very eager to, for Theatre Modo's first piece for theatre starts with the audience fully on board for the theatrical journey and they stay there, moving this company immediately into the ranks of the best children theatre. Gerda meets a large variety of characters all played by Toni Frutin, a dotty lady Teapot Teenie keen to have Gerda eat marmite meringues, help her get on Velveteena Pashima Costuma's TV make over show, then there's Ali Pally and his Reindeer Wally, a fortune teller and the audience contribute the Great Bog. The children and adults also join in some of the amusing rhyming songs created by Nick Underwood in an genuinely engaging all action rapidly moving show. The Dad beside my was well satisfied with the delighted children he had brought, "terrific show" was his verdict. I also spotted the staff at the venue beaming as they watched the fun. At the end an excited pleased buzz rose from children in the audience, clearly this show hits the spot and delights. The Queen is striking but not too terrifying it's all well thought out by director Martin Danziger and his company. Theatre Modo has no chill in its heart.- they set out to celebrate theatre at its best, engaging, inspiring and entertaining the audience they certain do in their Snow Queen. © Thelma Good 22 October 2005 - Published on EdinburghGuide.com Their next production will be Don Quixote in Spring 2005 their last was the award-winning UBU for adult and older teens.
