One interval of twenty minutes. Reviewer - Jan Natanson. Vivid and authentic. The play is set in a small town in the deep South of a Depression era USA. I don't know whether the theatre actually turned up the heating, but it felt like it. A wonderful set design takes us to a world of rundown clapboard houses and wooden porches - feeling the heat of high summer and the tensions about to erupt. This is a faithful adaptation for the stage of the best selling, Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Harper Lee. A lawyer Atticus Finch defends Tom Robinson, a man unfairly accused of rape. Atticus shows himself a man of integrity and risks his own and his family's safety to do the right thing in the face of the racism of his fellow townsfolk. His children, especially the tomboyish daughter Scout, make a journey of discovery about their father, their neighbours and the community they live in. This large cast production presents a vivid and authentic portrait of a whole community. A host of minor characters are fully fleshed out by the actors to bring the richness of the novel to the stage. The heart of the play is the trio of children through whose eyes we view that community. They are admirably played by Aoibheann O'Hara, Dominic Brewer and Stewart Cairns and Jonathan Coote gives a fine performance in the central role of Atticus Finch. The trial and the
repercussions for the Finch family present a gripping drama, full of tensions
and character revelations. It makes for an engaging evening at the theatre. Theatre
