Run Time - 2hr 40 minutes. One interval of twenty minutes. Reviewer - Jan Natanson. Lively production. From the moment the curtain rises we are in the mind of a master storyteller. A brooding atmosphere hints at dark deeds and betrayals. And as an audience we're caught. We're intrigued to find out what happened in the past to cast such a long shadow. Garce Barnes' stage adaptation is faithful to the well loved adventure story. A large cast production brings Stevenson's novel to life with a host of characters vividly portrayed . The play never forgets its roots in the novel form. The act of writing an account of the adventure forms a framework for the dramatisation as an older Jim Hawkins watches his own younger self participate in the action. And it is a tale of action. Plots, murders and plenty of fights. Even if you are familiar with the story there's a great deal of entertainment in watching the plot unfold with all the twists and turns. It is quite a long show and the pace sags sometimes. Although it is a children's classic story, younger children might get find its wordiness hard going. A problem for adults, is the very familiarity of the story which pulls the punch of the menace and dramatic tension. The set is a delight, transforming itself to an authentic ship to sweep us off on Stevenson's swashbuckling pirate adventure. We can practically smell the salty air. Another delight of the show is in the various bizarre and colourful characters portrayed so admirably by the ensemble company. Long John Silver , played by Gregory Gudgeon does very well to bring a freshness to a part long subject to caricature. It's a lively production, packed full of event and action - a great adventure story and an entertaining evening in the theatre. ©Jan Natanson 16 July 2005 - Published on EdinburghGuide.com .
