Well packed text. Some of us fly without a second thought, some of us only leave the ground in a near state of terror. Strapped in and flying back from Los Angles to Glasgow, Maggie's the latter sort, she's all of a shake when Brace Position starts. Even the warm, relaxing American tones of the pilot, the voice of Paul Brichard are not enough to calm her. Wendy Seagar skilfully ensures Maggie's excessive nerves amuse rather than irritate. Playwright Rona Munro gives the adult, unexpectedly having to go back to Scotland siblings dialogue that sparkles with recognition. Whether you're like Maggie, usually living very close to her parents or Simon Tait's seemingly laid back Mark, who vamoosed to far away assuming that really the parents didn't care enough to mind if he left, Munro's characters have their own way with original phrases. This means you listen and enjoy all their inventiveness - the only heard Pilot has his moment. Set in a plane's cabin on two aircraft seats it could have been a very static piece but the excellent cast, Gerda Stevenson's intelligent direction and the well packed text all have us flying with this brother and sister and re-examining our own relationships and our fears. There's also the delight of seeing up close actors whose voices are well known from radio as well as being seen on TV and stage. And that's true of some of the lunchtime theatre goers at The Jam House and Oran Mor as well as the quality on stage actors giving a lunchtime treat to A Play, A.Pie and And A Pint audiences. © Thelma Good 2 October 2006 - Published on EdinburghGuide.com Cast - Maggie - Wendy Seagar, Mark - Simon Tait and Pilot - Paul Birchard.
