This is an important story , simply and elegantly told, which engages fully with a wide audience. Originally commissioned for young people, it doesn't patronise its intended audience. Giving enough (probably needed) information for them to understand the context, it does so in a straightforward direct way, while not alienating adult members of the audience. This first rate play shows how theatre for young people can be intelligent, thought provoking and deal with serious issues, while engaging wholeheartedly with the audience. It is hard to find fault with any aspect of writing, direction or acting. Set during World War 2 , the theme - how to live a decent , honourable life when all boundaries of such decency have broken down - has plenty to say to the current generation. In an orphanage in the Warsaw ghetto in 1942, the director of the orphanage and champion of children's rights, Dr Korczak struggles to keep alive the torch of human decency and fairness in such a dire situation. The excellent design uses the device of rag dolls and carved wooden dolls to supplement the cast of three actors adding simplicity and clarity, while at the same time resonates with subtle layers of meaning and poignancy. Though the story may be simple the characters are complex and well rounded and the cast skillfully and deftily portray them.
