Embrace the lyricism...engage the audience. It's appropriate this multi award winning play should be touring to far flung parts of Scotland. Themes - about being remote from the centre of things and how this effects the way you are treated - will gain added emotional resonance from audiences in peripheral areas. As befits a touring production the set is pared back to simple elements. But these are well chosen and, with the lighting, informs the action in a meaningful and subtle way. The play is a mixture of fact and fiction - inspired by real events but as re-imagined. A magical and powerful piece of theatre is created by the playwright Zinnie Harris's imagination. The play starts with rumblings and anticipations of change - return of a native, a pregnancy and strange natural phenomena. Life for the inhabitants on an isolated Atlantic island ( resounances of Tristan da Cunha here) is about to be disrupted. An entrepreneur arrives wanting to start up a factory but a volcanic eruption forces an evacuation. The play explores issues of how changes and contact with the outside world work on the inhabitants' simple lives and sense of self. The islanders themselves have secrets which work out their effects on their present lives. It is a non -naturalistic piece of theatre and the islanders speak a re-imagined language which with its repetitions and strong cadences creates a poetic lyricism and allows a heightened emotional expressiveness. It all adds to the sense of the timelessness and universality of the drama. The excellent cast, directed by Ben Twist, embrace the lyricism of the language and the emotions of the drama with enthusiasm and skill. By their strong characterization they provide a rooted-ness to the piece . This means - for all the non-naturalistic elements - the audience is fully engaged and care deeply about the fate of the characters. ©Jan Natanson 13 February 2006 - Published on EdinburghGuide.com Cast - Mill - Carol Ann Crawford, Bill - Jonathan Battersby, Francis - Sam Laydon, Rebecca - Isabella Jade Fane, Mr Hansen - Matthew Zajac. 2006 Tour Details of Prime Production's production of Futher Than The Furthest Thing .
