Run Time - 2 hours 20 mins including an Interval . Reviewer - Alex Eades. Hard hitting stuff! Now, before I get started on this show, I want to get one thing cleared up. I have never actually seen the movie Get Carter before in my life. I know! I know! I’m a very bad person who should be dealt with immediately. But, there you go. I admit it. It’s out there now. To be honest, I was a little concerned about seeing this having no real knowledge about the book or film. But hey! If it’s good, it’s good. I’m relatively smart. I’ve been educated. I’ll be able to spot its pros and its cons. If there are any of you out there who don’t know the plot (and I know you ’re out there!), here’s a brief. It’s 1971 and Jack Carter, a London gangster, returns to his hometown to investigate the death of his brother. Carter suspects foul play and seeks to find those responsible and “sort ‘em out”, if you catch my meaning. What stands out about Red Shifts' production is the performances. Powerful and chilling, the cast act their socks off and reflect the equally powerful dramatisation by director Jonathan Holloway almost to perfection. The characters they play are people that you’ve probably met before. The kind you've overheard in a bar or watched crossing the street thinking “There’s something about them that doesn’t quite feel right”. The sense of reality that the actors bring to these characters is scary and I applaud that. The one quibble I have about this show is its length. There are points that you just don’t feel like it’s going anywhere and your mind starts to wander to the bar, looking for that interval drink. Another fight. Another character to shout at. It’s all very well, but it does get a little bit tiresome and appears to serve little purpose. Fifteen minutes shaved off and it would have been a superior piece. However, this really is a minor detail in an gripping, heartstopping and superb piece of theatre. And yes, I am going to make the effort to see the film now. Maybe even read the book. © Alex Eades 26 January 2006 - Published on EdinburghGuide.com Cast - Keith, Eric, Casino Doorman, Gerald Fletcher, Peter the Dutchman - Daniel Copeland, Cyril Kinnear, Cliff Brumby, Albert, Con McCarty, Les Fletcher - Kieron Jecchinis, Jack Carter - Jack Lord, Edna Garfoot, Old Madam, Margaret - Sally Orrock, Doreen Carter, Audrey Fletcher, Glenda - Angela Ward and Frank Carter, Eddie, Thorpe, Maurice, Postmaster - Tim Weekes. 2005 Tour Details of Red Shift Theatre's production of Get Carter .
