Achieves considerable tension and pain but...

Mothers and daughters, the ties that bind and cut, the love that hurts and sometimes heals. Reeling and Writhing were inspired by Anthony Minghella's poem Mosaic to make Good Reason. The result contains powerful moments, though bookending it with the text of the inspiring poem both gives it a shaky start and arrests its striking climax.

Elspeth Murray and Tim Nunn have created a text which particularily gives intensity for the daughter Annie played with inner angish by Gillian Lees. Linda Duncan McLaughlin has the harder task as Liz the mother who with her years of repression, ritual use of post-it notes and not so clearly concieved voice. Not that either Liz or Annie are the women you'd most want to meet, both of them maybe got the men they deserved.

Betrayed they both are, by the past, by the present and crucially by their unseen men. On a set where their kitchens and living rooms are suggested, there are sometimes portrayed a succession of doors for no discernible reason. Annie is her Dad's Little Angel and this is a family some of whose tensions many share. One where there are things unspoken whose ripples mould and change large continents of their worlds.

At times Good Reason achieves considerable tension and pain but at others it tips towards a unhelpful blandness or too frequent use of monologues. If you're in a relationship or about to see your mother or daughter this play may make you pause and reflect. It's just a shame the creators felt the necessity to insert the poem Mosaic twice. Sometimes inspirations are best left behind to let the new creation really fly.
