Character filled shoes.
As the audience settle down Angela Darcy removing the red socks
from the line streched across the grey washed set creates a rapport. She
interacts with them making sure they want to come with her in the story
of young love telling the story with character filled shoes.
Shoes as puppets? Well yes, in Visible Fictions' production Shopping
For Shoes they are all we see of Siobhan, the boy she fancies Sean
and all their families moved imaginatively by Angela Darcy. The
pairs, moved to amusingly reflect their wearers, are produced from lots
of brown cardboard boxes which are rearranged throughout the production
to give many different levels. Sean's in particular are very fashionable
and expensive.
Tim Crouch's script contains an eco-message about the impact of
consummerism but it's delivered gently. The main story of Siobhan's attempts
to attract Sean causes much "been there and got embrassed" mirth
from the pre-teen and teenagers, it takes young attraction seriously nonetheless.
The side details of their families with Sean's tiny shoed sister and Siobhan's
mother off in the Highlands wearing wellies combine under Douglas Irvine's
direction and in Darcy's hands to make this "here today"
story entertain.
Designed for 10 - 16 year olds, the staging and the use of shoes appearing
from the much rearranged boxes has this sometimes tricky age group watching,
laughing and thinking about the shoes on their feet and the brandnames
on the street in a different light.
