Assured adaptation, slick, assured production.

From the moment we see Ken Harrison's set, we know exactly where we are. It is gorgeous, bright, sun lit and pastel coloured. But it gives dreary reality a swerve and exuberantly embraces its cardboard cut-out-ness. It's the idealised country house from the comic genius that is P.G.Wodehouse - Blandings Castle complete with topiary pigs. The action takes place there and at other venues in London in the 1920s.

The world of Wodehouse's fiction - of disapproving aunts, eccentric aristocrats and jolly young gals and nice but dim young men - is familiar and makes for splendidly entertaining comedy situations. This slick, assured production, directed by Richard Baron, fully realises such comedy potential and adds a few surprises along its sparkling way.

One of the joys of his novels is the amount of fun and comedy in his language and style of writing. Giles Havergal's assured adaptation manages to keep that important element without slowing down the pace of dramatic action in a witty and shimmering with life script. The play rattles along with the actors work hard at making it seem so effortless, so that we, the audience can sit back and enjoy the verve and wit.

The cast vividly bring the various characters to life and engage the audience in their problems as the plots twists uncurl. This is a wonderful ensemble performance by the cast to produce an entertaining, witty and slick production. Smiling faces leave the auditorium the result of a play engaging the audience fully.
