Pulled up short by the real emotional drama.

Set in the last decade of the 19th century this drama exposes the hypocritical moral code of that society. The central characters, Mrs Arbuthnot and Lord Illingworth, embody the double standards that applied to those who broke the code.

It is through their story the theme is explored. Written by Oscar Wilde, the play is chock full of witty epigrams and - like the devil having the best tunes - it is the cynical and amoral characters who have the best lines. The action takes place at Hunstanton Chase and Mrs Arbuthnot's house over a period of twenty four hours, giving the play a dramatic intensity which kicks in when the witticisms begin to weary.

The set is fittingly simple. This is a drama where the colourful characters are not to be outshone by the decor. A country house is made a reality through the effective use of well chosen objects and items of furniture.

Well paced, this is a fine piece of ensemble playing directed by Ben Twist. There's a lot of comedy in the characters who attend the country house. To bring out the full comedy potential the actors manage to keep just the right line in affectionate send up. I especially enjoyed Archdeacon Daubney played by Martyn James.

Because we are enjoying the comedy so much, we are pulled up short by the real emotional drama that develops. Wilde created a skilfully written play, this production and performances are equally skilled in its delivery.
