Exhibition of EIF Pictures Opens at The Hub

An exhibition of photographs from the recent Edinburgh International Festival, entitled The Big Picture, has just opened at The Hub.

Each year the Edinburgh International Festival invites talented emerging photographers from across Scotland to apply for the role of Festival Photographer, a position made possible through the support of the Morton Charitable Trust.

Recent graduate of Stevenson College’s HND in Photography, Eoin Carey was selected from the many applicants to take on this challenge.

This exhibition goes beyond the Festival performances with behind-the-scenes shots of The Revenge of Prince Zi Dan cast, festival director Jonathan Mills getting a kiss at the artists' reception, and even Ravi Shankar's small, white dog.

Jonathan Mills, Festival Director said: “We chose Eoin for his talent and energy, his ability to put people at ease and his eye for organisation which makes the extensive collection of his photos of Festival 2011 such a valuable resource. We are delighted with the archive he has gifted the Festival, just a hint of which is visible through this exhibition of wonderful photos. We hope people will come to The Hub to enjoy again Festival 2011 but from a very different perspective.

“I would like to thank the Trustees of The Morton Charitable Trust for their vision and commitment, to both the Festival and the young photographers who go on this exhilarating adventure with us.”

Eoin Carey, Festival Photographer 2011 said:  “As the official photographer it allowed me a unique perspective on the mechanics of such a huge operation. While I was able to capture images of the performances for media and archive purposes, my proximity to all the technical and administrative facets of the festival led me to witness it as a performance in itself. I was provided with access to the venues and theatres, and given carte blanche to document the development of the festival as I saw it. It was both a monumental experience and a tremendous privilege.”

“On a level of professional development, this placement has been unparalleled. It offered front line experience working with the media and has acted as an incomparable opportunity with which to build my portfolio and build my career.”

A selection of Eoin’s photos from Festival 2011 can be seen online and you can listen to a podcast of Eoin describing his experience as Festival Photographer 2011 at http://edintfest.podbean.com.

The Hub is open daily 9.30am – 6pm.
