To celebrate the bicentenary of Fryderyk Chopin’s birth, the National Library of Scotland is offering the chance to view an exclusive Chopin display which documents the composer’s visit to Scotland in 1848.
Chopin made quite an impression during his visit to Scotland, and performed at several concerts and informal recitals. He stayed on Warriston Crescent in Edinburgh and enjoyed an extensive trip throughout Central Scotland, visiting friends near Strachur, Motherwell, Hamilton, Dunblane and Stirling to name a few. The trip was organised by his friend Jane Stirling whose family owned a selection of his music which appears in the display.
The display also includes a facsimile edition of set music showing markings and annotations in Chopin’s own hand, a photograph of Jane Stirling’s ‘Erard’ piano which Chopin is likely to have played during his stay, and the announcement of the Chopin soirée at the Hopetoun Rooms in October 1848 which appeared in the Edinburgh Advertiser and The Scotsman.
The display also includes Chopin sheet music, maps tracing his steps around Scotland and reviews of one his concerts in Edinburgh.
The Chopin exhibition will be on public display at NLS until March 17.
