The 445 places for the New Year's day Edinburgh triathlon have already filled up, but if you were out the night before at the Hogmanay street party then the chances are that your preferred option will be watching this from the sidelines.

While competitive, organisers point out that this is an all-inclusive, fun race for those who have never done a triathlon before (about a third of participants are triathlon virgins each year) or a competitive test of winter fitness for the experienced.

The triathlon includes 400m swim (8 lengths) of the Commonwealth Pool, an 11 mile cycle (three times around Arthurs Seat in a clockwise direction) and 3.5 mile run (once around Arthurs Seat again clockwise).

There is a separate "Iron Kids" race for 8 to 15 year olds which involves a short run, 2k bike, short run - all on closed roads. The Childrens race is at 11.30, the adults starts at 12.30.
