Description

For more than a decade now millions of readers, from around the globe have joined in World Book Day.  The UNESCO World Book Day festivities includes publication of six specially written World Book Day £1 flip books, with two stories by two bestselling authors in one book for £1; a chance to enjoy new authors and titles with Spread the Word: Books to Talk About, and a huge range of events and initiatives taking place up and down the country.

Edinburgh Highlights

When: Monday 2nd March - Sunday 8th March 09

What: Activities include:

1. The Bookstore will give children a
chance to Spread the Word about their favourite book by designing a poster.
There will be prizes for the best.

2. Complete a short story started by the
bookshop's book club members -the club have provided
the opening sentence to ten stories and participating children will finish the
story. There will be prizes for the best.

3. The store will lead a discussion about
children's favourite books and the reasons why they are popular.

4. Craft, colouring and quiz activities which
will be operating around World Book Day titles including Beast Quest, Mr Gum,
Percy Jackson and Tyrannosaurus Drip to name a few.

5. The bookstore will also make a giant World
collage and flag with the children's favourite books

6.  On Thursday 5th March
the stores Book Club will participate in activities to celebrate the day. Every
one is welcome. Book club starts at 6.45 until 8.15 pm.

What: Meet Julia Donaldson & Axel Scheffler

To celebrate World Book Day, on Thursday, 12 March 2009 at
10:30AM Waterstones are giving children a chance to meet Julia Donaldson and
Axel Scheffler. Join the store on this special occasion where Julia Donaldson
& Axel Scheffler the creators of the worldwide bestseller ‘The
Gruffalo' will be signing copies of their books. Children will also be
able to meet the Gruffalo and wish him a Happy 10th Birthday!

What: Famous Illustrator of Hamish McHaggis and Greyfriars Bobby,
Sally Collins, will be spending time at Campie Primary School
in aid of World Book Day.

Primary Three

Sally will be sharing secrets
about Hamish McHaggis and his friends
-Angus the pinemartin, Jeannie the
osprey and Rupert the hedgehog. This will include drawing the character
workshop and colouring sheets from the Hamish McHaggis series to take home.

Primary Four and Five

Sally will be chatting about her other illustrated work in
the book, Greyfriars Bobby. She will be explaining how the drawings evolve into
finished artwork and how to draw animals. There will also be time for a
question and answers session and the chance to take home worksheets and bookmarks.

Over 13 million school children will
receive a World Book Day £1 Book Token which can be exchanged for a World Book Day £1 Book, throughout March, from over
3,000 participating bookshops and book retailers across the UK and Republic of
Ireland.  The £1 Token can also be put towards any book or audio book costing
£2.99 or more.

Each World
Book Day £1 Book
is suitable for a different age range, from
pre-school to 11+ years, so every child can enjoy at least one of the unique
books being produced to celebrate this special day.  The eleven £1 book authors
include the creator of the Gruffalo, Julia Donaldson, the duo behind the
bestselling Horrible Histories series, Terry Deary and Martin Brown, the Roald
Dahl Funny Prize winner Andy Stanton and the team behind the bestselling YUCK
series, Matt and Dave.

For the fourth year running, there is a new
series of ten Quick Reads published on World Book Day, which this year includes non-fiction titles.  This
innovative and popular range of short and accessible books is aimed at the
millions of people who just don't have time to read or who struggle to
finish a book. This year's Quick Reads include titles by some of
Britain's most popular and engaging personalities, including Sherrie
Hewson, Ian Rankin and Kate Mosse, as well as a new adventure featuring
television favourite Doctor Who.
