The Guardian newspaper's chief economics and finance journalist Will Hutton lays out the implications of "China's century" for the West in The Writing on the Wall: China and the west in the 21st century.

China already has a fifth of the world's population and the fifth largest economy. In 20 years it is set to become second only to the US. Hutton asks how this transition and rise - both internally in China and externally in the world beyond - can be done safely. The world's peace and prosperity depends upon it.

The lecture is in the Hawthornden Lecture Theatre.
