The 17th annual Scottish Traditional Boat Festival a celebration of traditional maritime heritage with a strong craft programme relating to the sea. It takes place in Portsoy on the north east coast of Scotland on 26 and 27 June.

Traditional boats from several countries will descend on the historic harbour at Portsoy creating a fascinating and eyecatching backdrop. But, as usual, the festival is much more than a celebration of the breadth and diversity of traditional sailing and fishing craft.

Extolling and promoting the values of taste, style, heritage and authenticity, the Scottish Traditional Boat Festival is a community project which continually raises the bar year after year. The 2010 event, which expects to attract more than 15,000 visitors to the town, also features an excellent craft programme for 2010.

An even wider range of traditional craft demonstrations including, rigging, sailmaking, boat building, basket making, knitting, weaving and coracle making will take place this year.

In the main marquee of the Festival the GalGael Trust will be holding demonstrations of a range of traditional maritime crafts. Best known for engaging the community in building and sailing traditional boats in celebration of Scotland’s heritage, the GalGael Trust is a cultural anchor point around which local people are re-kindling skills, community and a sense of purpose. In conjunction with DORNA Scotland, a partnership celebrating traditional boat-building in Scotland, GalGael will be sharing the historic craft skills employed in building traditional vessels.

The Old Harbour area will focus on maritime crafts and the Bothy area will be home to a range of demonstrations in the Living Tradition marquee ranging from knitting and weaving to wood turning and upholstering.
