Edinburgh Christmas Light Night
Edinburgh's Christmas 2011 season gets going today at 10am, with the turning of the large ferris wheel known as the Edinburgh Wheel, and the traditional switching on of Christmas lights this evening. The lighting-up ceremony is centred on the iconic Norwegian Christmas tree on The Mound (one of a number of Edinburgh Christmas Light Nights around town).
Before the turning on of the Christmas tree lights at 5.15pm, there's a light projection display on George Street featuring walkabout characters from 4pm.
After the turning on of the Christmas tree lights, bagpipers will lead the crowd to St Andrew Square for a show featuring music and dance.
This is the 26th year that the people of Hordaland in Norway have given a large conifer to the people of Edinburgh at Christmas.
During the day, there are also christmas food markets and the ice rink in East Princes Street Gardens.
A free Norwegian Carol Service follows the christmas tree lights switch-on.
