Description

Michael Brecker was an incredibly talented musician: a hugely influential saxophonist with a distinctive sound who inspired thousands of jazz players all over the world.

Together Michael and Randy formed the iconic Brecker Brothers Band of the 70 - 90s widely regarded as one of the most successful jazz-funk fusion bands of the 70-90s. until sadly Michael was diagnosed with a rare form of leukaemia and died prematurely in 2007.   Michael had won 15 grammy Awards for his music and compositions.

In playing tribute to the late Michael Brecker, the SNJO are delighted that his brother Randy, one of the world’s greatest trumpet players and himself a winner of 5 Grammies, will join them to celebrate Michael’s music in brand new arrangements spanning vital tracks from the Brecker Brothers’ 1970s heyday through to the beautifully reflective atmosphere of his 2003 album, Wide Angles.

SNJO director, Tommy Smith, says: “Michael Brecker was an incredibly talented musician and he remains an inspiration to thousands of jazz players all over the world, and we’re proud to have his brother, Randy, who is one of the world’s greatest trumpeters, joining SNJO to pay tribute to one of the real titans of jazz’s modern age.”

The concert will be opened by the Edinburgh Schools Jazz Orchestra.
