Established in 2004, the Edinburgh Art Festival is the newest major addition to Edinburgh's August Festivals line-up, but it fills a longtime gap. Visual art somehow seemed obscured by the creative mayhem of the rest of the festival before the galleries clubbed together and launched their own festival within the Edinburgh Festival.
The flagship Edinburgh International Festival (EIF), a high-brow assembly of some of the world's best music, opera, theatre, and dance companies, was launched in 1947 as a stage for peace and unity in Europe after the Second World War. It was out of the Festival that the now massive Edinburgh Fringe sprung and grew in subsequent years.
As the names suggests, the annual "Mela" is a "festival" or "fair" with a South Asian flavour, but incorporating Scottish and international performances and artists for a multi-cultural flavoured mix. It was founded in 1995.
Hundreds of runners wearing specially commissioned light suits will negotiate the intricate network of narrow paths below the rugged mini-mountain of Arthur's Seat in Holyrood Park, illuminati
