Description

Borrowing from the traditional Orkney Ba' on New Year's Day, various venues in Edinburgh's Old Town will see two teams of Uppies and Doonies compete in four sets of games between 2pm and 5.15pm.

You choose the team based whether you feel you are a Northerner (Uppie) or Southerner (Doonie), and then win tokens for your team at the various games. Rather than the rough and tumble of the ba' these are more gentle, artist-inspired games with a competitive element.

They include "Throw Things at Found" (music and projectiles at the Hub), "Scotchhoppers" (Hopscotch challenges at Dancebase), Resonate the Labyrinth ("a game of sound, movement and monsters" at St Giles), and Dreadnought (mine dodging at the National Museum of Scotland}.

There's also fun and games in the Playground in the Grassmarket from 2pm-5pm.

Players bring their tokens to the Grassmarket by 5.30pm where the team with the most tokens wins.

The Closing Ceremony is at the Grassmarket from 5.30pm to 6pm.
