Edinburgh Christmas Light Night
Edinburgh's Christmas 2014 season launches on a Sunday, wtih the first in a series of Christmas light nights this evening.
Around 1,250 performers from over 50 schools and community groups, will take part in the free, community event on stages erected along the length of George Street. Expect performers like the Edinburgh Gorgie Salvation Army Band, Sing in the City, Edinburgh University Chamber Choir, and musicians from Hordaland and the Edinburgh Rock Choir, leading the street in the sing-a-long.
Following the switch on of the lights - usually attended by the Lord Provost of the City of Edinburgh and Deputy Covener of Hordaland County Council, Norway, there is a firework display (at 4.50pm). Hordland provides the iconic Norwegian Christmas tree on The Mound.
During the day, there are also christmas food markets and the ice rink in East Princes Street Gardens. There are a number of smaller Christmas Light Nights in other Edinburgh areas in the days following the main Light Night event.
A free Norwegian Carol Service usually follows the christmas tree lights switch-on.
