The fossil fuel era is over. The coal (in particular) and the oil and gas sectors are sunset industries. At least, if politicians follow up on their rhetoric about tackling climate change by pricing green house gas emissions.

Energy prices have cascaded downwards in recent months at a staggering rate, surprising most investors (with, say some market analysts, more falls in fossil fuels to come).

Carbon Tracker Initiative (see video above) estimates that 80% of fossil fuel reserves must stay in the ground. Many fossil fuel companies will be unviable, unless they quickly adapt to the coming low carbon era.

As part of the Global Day of Divestment, activists are holding a Valentine's Day event at The Mound outside the National Gallery of Scotland entitled Fossil Free "For The Love Of" Action + Activities.

The idea is encourage people to do the right thing and remove their investments from companies that are polluting the atmosphere with greenhouse gases or banks that are financing those industries.

The day includes actions and petition signing for divestment from fossil fuels and the launch of the "For the love of" campaign in Edinburgh.

The event is organised by Activists Assemble, the People's Climate March, Greenpeace Edinburgh and Friends of the Earth Edinburgh. See link above for more details.
