The Festival of Politics is a populist, accessible festival set in the Scottish parliament at Holyrood. The festival pulls together talks, debates, film screenings, music, food, and exhibitions.

This year, the BBC’s flagship political programme, Question Time, comes from the festival.

The festival tackles issues that have swept the globe since 1918. This year, subjects vary from Suffrage to the #MeToo campaign; the end of the First World War and the importance of remembrance; Scotland’s Year of Young People; the politics of housing, disability and food banks; the impact and repercussions of Brexit, trade wars and a new Cold War.

The programme includes a futures strand looking at mobile phone use and social media influence, a robot economy, and the changing face of public broadcasting.

This year's participants include political grandees Lord Michael Heseltine and Dame Margaret Hodge MP, historian Professor Emeritus Sir Tom Devine OBE, global best-selling author and academic Professor Mary Beard, Booker Prize winning novelist and poet Ben Okri, and social commentator and Orwell Prize winner Darren McGarvey aka Loki.

The Festival Café Bar will see massed choirs, music and dance. An exhibition of original artwork from the graphic novel anthology in celebration of women gaining the vote in the UK, We Shall Fight Until We Win will hang alongside the Never Such Innocence exhibition of artwork and poetry by school-children in response to the First World War.
