Christmas, or Xmas for non-believers, used to be a quiet period in Edinburgh. It's less so now, although (Edinburgh's Hogmanay aside) it's still not quite as mad as the hurlyburly of the Edinburgh Festival in August.

Mr Claus, at least the Santa of the official Edinburgh's Christmas, settles in to his Castle Street grotto this year.

A new addition to Edinburgh's Christmas festival in 2018, Silent Light is a silent dance party under the temporary electric light installation on George Stree

After selling 70,000 tickets in its first year in 2017, Christmas in the Botanics returns with new light installations and visual effects.

10:00 am

Bellies will bounce and beards fly when hundreds of Santas make their annual charity jog through Princes Street Gardens. The Santa run starts at around 1pm following a warm-up. The circuit around the gardens is around 2.5km, so even the most sleigh-bound Santa Claus shouldn't have too much of a problem.

3:00 pm

Get set to show off your best dance moves at the Tumbles soft play Christmas disco and party, with arts and crafts, face painting and a buffet bag. Santa will be visiting and there’ll be gifts for all good boys and girls.
