Christmas, or Xmas for non-believers, used to be a quiet period in Edinburgh. It's less so now, although (Edinburgh's Hogmanay aside) it's still not quite as mad as the hurlyburly of the Edinburgh Festival in August.

Prepare to be mesmerised by the uncanny illusionists from Edinburgh Young Carers in this free exhibition.

Traditionally, Hogmanay is marked in Scotland with friends and first footing at the strike of midnight in the New Year.

5:00 pm

Bairns Afore is an hour-long family hogmanay celebration, complete with fireworks display from Edinburgh Castle and West Princes Street Gardens, for those with early bedtimes.

6:00 pm

The annual candlelit concert in St. Giles Cathedral forms part of the Edinburgh's Hogmanay celebrations.

7:00 pm

The Street Party (tickets, review) is perhaps the best-known event in the 3-day Edinburgh's Hogmanay Festival. The New Year street party is a ticketed event that in 2018-2019 runs for seven hours the length of Princes Street, with live bands, a carnival atmosphere and dancing in the street.

8:00 pm

One of the official events at Edinburgh's Hogmanay, this traditional ceilidh dance for up to 3,600 people is held annually in the West End of West Princes Stre

9:00 pm

The Concert in the Gardens, part of the 3-day Edinburgh's Hogmanay Festival, takes place in a ticketed area in Princes Street Gardens West within the Edinburgh's Hogmanay Street Party arena. The Ross Band stand provides a dramatic setting under Edinburgh Castle rock.
