Christmas, or Xmas for non-believers, used to be a quiet period in Edinburgh. It's less so now, although (Edinburgh's Hogmanay aside) it's still not quite as mad as the hurlyburly of the Edinburgh Festival in August.

Traditionally, Hogmanay is marked in Scotland with friends and first footing at the strike of midnight in the New Year.

The Street Party (tickets, review) is perhaps the best-known event in the 3-day Edinburgh's Hogmanay Festival. The New Year street party is a ticketed event that in 2018-2019 runs for seven hours the length of Princes Street, with live bands, a carnival atmosphere and dancing in the street.
