Christmas, or Xmas for non-believers, used to be a quiet period in Edinburgh. It's less so now, although (Edinburgh's Hogmanay aside) it's still not quite as mad as the hurlyburly of the Edinburgh Festival in August.

Mr Claus, at least the Santa of the official Edinburgh's Christmas, settles in to his Castle Street grotto this year.

A new addition to Edinburgh's Christmas festival in 2018, Silent Light is a silent dance party under the temporary electric light installation on George Stree

After selling 70,000 tickets in its first year in 2017, Christmas in the Botanics returns with new light installations and visual effects.

St. Andrew's Day commemorates Scotland's patron saint and is a Scottish Bank Holiday, although employers are not obliged to give employees time off. St. Andrew's Day is marked on 30th November every year. If that date is on the weekend, the St. Andrew's Day Bank Holiday takes place on the following Monday 1st or 2nd December.
